    I Love You

How do I begin to tell you how lucky I am
to have you in my life?
I’ll start by saying what an honor it is
for me to be your wife.

You’re my best friend in the good times
and my rock in times of sorrow.
You’re the reason for sweet yesterdays
    and my promise for tomorrow.

I never thought I could feel this loved
    until I became your wife.
You made this year and every year
the best one of my life.

Antwerp has been known as the Diamond Center of the World for centuries. So it is hardly surprising that this city is home to the largest Diamond Museum in the world.

    Some Famous Diamonds

milleniumstar2808_468x589 Star of Africa (Cullinan 1) This is the largest diamond in the world, at 530.20 carats. It is now in the Royal Scepter in the Tower of London. This diamond was cut from the 3,106-carat Cullinan—the largest diamond ever found.
insight_jun04_mailbox_kohinoor_large Kah-i-Nur: (Mountain of Light) This diamond has the oldest recorded history, since 1304. Originally, the legend is that the Mogul emperors possessed this diamond, but upon the breakup of the Mogul empire, the diamond made its way into India, and thence to Afghanistan, where it traveled back to India. There, the East India Company took it and presented it to Queen Victoria.
hope-diamond-ring-thumb Hope Diamond: This diamond is ironically named after 1830 purchaser Henry Thomas Hope. It is thought to be a part of the Blue Tavernier Diamond found in 1692. The Hope diamond was purchased by King Louis XIV of France (whose sad history many of us know). Stolen during the French Revolution, it surfaced in 1830 when Hope bought it. Hope’s son lost his fortune after inheriting the diamond, and it was sold to an American widow, Mrs. Edward McLean. After the purchase, her child was killed, her family broke up, the widow became destitute, and then committed suicide. When it came up for auction, potential buyers wouldn’t touch the diamond. It now resides in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

Chemicals known as perfluorinated chemicals, which are pervasive in food packaging, pesticides, clothing, upholstery, carpets and personal care products, may delay pregnancy, a new study suggests.

These chemicals are being phased out in the United States because of their toxic effects, and are expected to be completely gone by 2010. However, they remain in the environment and in the body for decades, and have been linked to developmental problems.

“ These widespread chemicals apparently lower the fertility in couples trying to get pregnant,” said lead researcher Dr. Jorn Olsen, chairman of the Department of Epidemiology at UCLA’s School of Public Health.

French fries can contain a large amount of fat (usually saturated) or oils from frying. Some researchers have suggested that the high temperatures used for frying such dishes may have results harmful to health (see acrylamides). In the United States about ¼ of vegetables consumed are prepared as French fries and are proposed to contribute to widespread obesity. Frying French fries in beef tallow adds saturated fat to the diet. Replacing tallow with tropical oils such as palm oil simply substitutes one saturated fat for another. Replacing tallow with partially hydrogenated oil reduces cholesterol but adds trans fat, which has been shown to both raise LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol.[34][35][36] Many restaurants now advertise their use of unsaturated oils. Five Guys, for example, advertises their fries are prepared in peanut oil.

French fries may be tasty, but doctors have long warned against consuming them too often because of their hefty doses of both sodium and saturated fats. For dieters, french fries have long been a forbidden thing. Now there may be even more reason, given a report in 2005, to choose a healthier alternative to french fries. In late 2005, a survey study by several women’s hospitals, Harvard, and Brigham Young University evaluated nurses who had consumed french fries at least once weekly during early childhood. Those nurses who had eaten french fries on a weekly basis were 27% more likely to develop breast cancer as adults.

While the study is not all-inclusive, since it only studied one population, it does lead one to conclude that french fries may pose additional risks to developing one of the most difficult and life-altering cancers. In response, many fast food companies began offering alternatives to french fries, such as fruit or vegetable servings.

This study did not suggest that all “forbidden foods” pose the same potential risk. Women who ate hot dogs or ice cream, according to this survey were found to be at no additional risk for developing breast cancer.

A similar study done in Sweden in 2002 suggested that heating certain starchy foods, like potatoes or breads tends to produce a chemical called acrylamide, which is thought to be a cancer causing substance. French fries and potato chips were particularly high in this substance, thus providing a potential link between french fries and cancer. However, the study, which included random samples, was not wide enough to warrant removal of such products from the market.

As well, the chemical seemed to be present whether a potato was baked or fried. This suggests one might still be at increased risk if one chooses oven french fries or a baked potato over a serving of french fries.

In 2006, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition further concluded that both potatoes and french fries seem to lead to an increased risk in the development of Type II diabetes. The risk was higher among women who were already obese.

All these combined studies suggest that potatoes and french fries in particular may not be a good nutritional choice, and should be eaten sparingly. However, other studies have shown that starchy foods like baked potatoes do have some health benefits as well. In all cases, it would seem that most important is eating a varied diet, with few repetitions of potentially harmful foods.

Just watched this film last night. It’s the best movie I’ve ever seen. It about a real life…

    x

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “ Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love. Written by Fox Searchlight Pictures

Eighteen year old Jamal Malik is having an amazing answering streak on the Indian version of the television game show, “ Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” . He’s only one correct question away from the big prize. However, some, including those associated with the game show, question how someone like Jamal, a self confessed non-genius who grew up in the slums of Mumbai, can be doing so well on the show when others who are brighter, more educated and wealthier than him have failed. Is Jamal cheating? Is it purely luck that they have asked him the questions to which he knows the answers? Seeing Jamal’s life journey to this point ultimately answers these questions. His life journey includes being orphaned at an early age; growing up with an older brother, Salim, who was both his guardian/protector and antagonist; and having a relationship since childhood with another orphaned child, a girl named Latika. His motivation for being on the show also may provide some answers to his success. Perhaps it was all just meant to be.
